Awesome work finding a noun and verb in this book! 'Crossed' would also be a verb. If the book had said HOW he had crossed the road, it would have added in an adverb.
Example: "...crossed the gravel road carefully." In this example, 'crossed' is a verb, 'road' is a noun, 'gravel' is an adjective and 'carefully' is an adverb.
