This is the largest species of octopus in the world. While common lore suggests these giant invertebrates can reach more than 30 feet (9.1 m) across and weigh more than 600 pounds (272 kg), more reliable reports put the record-holder at 400 pounds (182 kg) with an arm span of 25 feet (7.6 m).

Giant Pacific octopuses can consume 2–4% and gain 1–2% of their body weight each day. That's the equivalent of a 150-pound person eating up to six pounds of food and gaining up to three pounds every single day! .

The giant Pacific octopus is considered to be long-lived compared to other species, with lifespans typically 3–5 years in the wild. Many other octopuses go through a lifespan in one year, from egg to end of life.

Giant Pacific octopuses have huge, bulbous heads and are generally reddish-brown in color. Like the other members of the octopus family, though, they use special .

pigment cells in their skin to change colors and textures, and can blend in with even the most intricately patterned corals, plants, and rocks.
